Our children are scared of their toys!

Yesterday my grandson spent the day at my house. Like many 7 year old boys, Alex has a fascination with trains. Over the past 5 years we have indulged him with many Thomas the Tank Engine toy trains. Unfortunately, due to the efforts of the Peoples Republic of China to poison our children, yesterday was not a good day.

While rummaging through his toy trains, Alex came across an old favorite.  Normally when a child finds a misplaced favorite toy, it is a time for celebration and rejoicing. Not anymore! Instead, Alex came to me and asked me to check his toy to see if it was poisoned. He was further disappointed when we found that his red train was in fact considered to be unsafe and that he should not play with it. Although I explained to him that the real danger from the toy would be found from putting it in his mouth, Alex was not satisfied. He insisted that everyone who had handled the toy must immediatly wash their hands in order to remove the poison.

This got me thinking what a sad state of affairs it was when our children are scared of their own toys. What sort of country routinely makes products that are unsafe, knowing that children will be the end users? What sort of toy company imports these products and markets them to children? How are we to explain the danger to our children?
